A couple of weeks ago I was at the doggie park in Alameda. A man sitting at the picnic table remarked on the military badges on my hat. I told him about my four sons who served in the US Military, husband a Viet-Nan vet, and I served with the Women's Royal Air Force. Then I mentioned my eldest son received the Meritorious Service Medal for being personally responsible for killing 30 Taliban. I asked the man if he was in the military, and he said his wife used to be in the Army.
Then I had to leave the park to come home and make dinner. The man (Hugh) walked out in front of me. He came back with a small box, and said 'Give that to your son who earned the Meritorious Service Medal'. I was stunned, and almost speechless, but I managed a 'Thank you'.
When I went over to baby-sit my son's children I gave him the box. In the box was a knife, 'the type parachutists use to cut cords, and one can open it with one finger'. The knife was dedicated to Sgt 1st Class Merideth L Howard. I had been talking with Merideth's husband Hugh.
My son gave me the information the following week when I went over to his house. He said 'Mom, you have to sit down while I tell you the story of Sgt Merideth Howard', and he did.
Hugh left a small not in the box, and a Gold Star card. I also have his name, address, phone, and e-mail, and I'm putting togerther a letter to tell him thank you, and how much we appreciate him, and his wife's service to our country.
